Heroine Rises

The Butterfly Child

November 06 2019

And we're done! Chapter 10 took longer than expected (as is usual with chapters these days) but it's here! Meet 'Butterfly'!

A colored version of the cover will be out shortly - my coloring program didn't save my work when I was 95% done with the coloring job so guess who had to start all over? Lesson: Always save

Chapter 10 of Heroine Rises, titled The Butterfly Child, reunites our trio of Julian, Juliette, and Madeline while giving updates on other characters. The main trio head out to Grant Park to seek out Maeve, the daughter of Irene Lassiter, hoping that the young girl will be the map to the elusive Irene.

Commentary

I was excited to make this chapter and really liked how the script came out. However, I feel that I keep getting slower at making pages so I had to cut lots from my original script to keep myself kinda on schedule.

While making this chapter I noticed that I have lots of wordy and dialogue heavy sections. While paneling I tried my best to trim the dialouge but since it was done on the fly, I feel that the dialouge might have ended up choppy and strange in some places. That's just me. I don't know if it actually is like that.

I will try to keep the dialogue succint in future scripts to help with pacing issues.

I really enjoyed the process of drawing the Coastal Swamp backgrounds, it was something fresh and new for me. So far my characters have been exploring urban and suburban sections of Northern Serenity but this is the first time we've gone into a wild natural section of the islands. There are plenty more in the works and I can't wait to draw them! Yes, they take forever, but it's great fun to draw natural shapes and figures every once in a while.

What's Next? Chapter 1 Remake + SweetWater?

Chapter 11 ... I don't have a title for it yet. Titles are either the first or last thing to come to me and so far none of the possible names for 11 haven't stuck. So it's just Chapter 11 for now. We'll finally meet Irene Lassiter and get her side of things... if Madeline and her team can keep a lid on Irene's temperament.

Now the big one. When will it be ready? Honestly, I can't say. I've been feeling a bit overworked on Heroine Rises and I might be ready to take a long break. At least until the new year. But that won't mean the end of Rises!

I plan to re-draw Chapter 1 and use the original script I had for it. The current version of Small Time Detective was written with a condensed and less ambitious script since my paneling and artistic ability wasn't up to where I needed it to be. Nearly a year later, I think it's about time I go back and make Chapter 1 the way I envisioned it. It's no new chapter, but there will be some new panels and dialouge to read in the first chapter! It'll be great trust me.

I also think that I'm ready to start on a short series of comics I've been planning for some time. You've probably seen mentions or images of something called SweetWater here and there. SweetWater follows a young woman named Darcia, who runs away from the big city to a rural town seeking her personal happiness. I'll have a better pitch later on but if I don't work on Heroine Rises 11 expect to see updates on this SweetWater series.

Either Chapter 11 or SweetWater 1 get released by the end of the year. The Chapter 1 remake will get done in addition to the other!

I'll make an update where I explain which one I chose.

But until then, enjoy Chapter 10!
